It is clear that there are certain barriers to entry for entrepreneurial-minded UVA faculty, staff and students starting their own ventures. Probably the most common of these are a lack of time to commit to a new venture, and a lack of experience in starting a company. However there are other significant barriers, such as monetary limitations, difficulties in acquiring required conflict of interest and commitment waivers from UVA, an unfamiliarity with the local business and legal community available to assist in company development, and lack of access to necessary laboratory facilities and investment funds.

Spinner Technologies provides early-stage business services that are tailored to the needs of each of our developing member companies, and are designed to remove or reduce the number of barriers to entry into the entrepreneurial realm. As the member companies' business evolves and expands, so too will the nature of the services we provide. Such services presently can be separated in to four basic categories: formation services, referral services, advisory services, and facilities services.
